Yes, I am speaking to YOU! My name is Asa Leveaux and I am the person that created the Phoenix Pride Scholarship. I believe it's important to tell you exactly why I've chosen to spearhead this initiative that I hope serves you in the most remarkable way.
The first time that I started to wonder how I could help you and my other trans siblings was after I created Queer School which is an initiative of the Leveaux Foundation (501c3 organization) where I serve as the Executive Director. As I began to setup the curriculum I quickly began to understand that you and other trans individuals have specific and distinct challenges that I felt helpless in assisting. During this time I learned about an organization called Free Mom Hugs, created by Sara Cunningham, and I began to be inspired about the possibilities that reside outside of the box. The final purpose driven push was viewing "Disclosure", executive produced by Laverne Cox, which shows the history of how trans lives have been, and continuously are, depicted in the media. It was after watching this prolific documentary that I chose to not chose feel empathy for those like me that occupy what it means to be LGBTQ+, but to also ACT!
But why would I call this heart-centered initiative “Phoenix Pride”?
I chose the name because of my long term adoration of mythological creature that is the phoenix. I am smitten by it’s ability to fly to the highest heights, plummet to earth in an all consuming fire and then rising from those ashes like an intentional god. I am so inspired by their possibilities that I have a tribal phoenix tattooed on my back since 2009. In short, I see the many and varied journeys that trans people have and are now taking likened to that of the beautiful phoenix and the pride that comes over me when I see YOU fly.
As a result of receiving the Phoenix Pride Scholarship, you will receive the complete funds that it will take to ensure that your legal name change reflects who you have always been.
